There are times in life when we have to make decisions of great consequence — whether in the area of career, relationships, or a need to change location. Yet, because of the risk of things turning out differently than hoped, many people shrink back. But those who have impacted their generation did what they knew was God’s will, regardless of the risk involved.
One such person was Esther, whom the Lord used, alongside her uncle Mordecai, to deliver the Israelites from the evil plot of Haman (Esther 3:8–11). In going before the king to speak on behalf of her people, uninvited, she risked being killed. Fully aware of the risk, she made the decision, saying, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16).
During a time of war in Israel, the city was under siege, and there was famine in the land, to the extent that people were killing their children to eat them (2 Kings 6:24–29). However, there were four lepers outside the gates who were fed up with their situation and decided to surrender to the Aramean army, at the risk of their lives. In making this decision, they said, “If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die” (2 Kings 7:4).
Until we come to the point where what we stand to lose in seeking a change no longer sways us from making the decision that would lead to the change we desire, we are not ready for the change we seek. Surprisingly, those in Scripture who made such decisions at the risk of their lives did not lose them. Esther did not perish, nor were the four lepers killed. Rather, they obtained their desire, as God intervened in their situation.
Your faith and trust in God will only be revealed by the challenges along the path of your obedience. If you know that the decision you are making is inspired by the Spirit, do not be afraid to make it, regardless of what you stand to lose.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us be bold and courageous in doing that which is His will.
