“Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.’ “
— Numbers 13:30-31 (NIV)
In inheriting promises, there are usually challenges to overcome. However, our attitude before them will determine whether we obtain the promise or not.
We see this in the biblical account of the Israelites going into the Promised Land (Numbers 13-14). At one point, Moses sent twelve spies into the land of Canaan. On their return, ten of them gave a negative report, but Caleb and Joshua stood positive (Numbers 13:30-33; 14:6-9). Some years ago, the Lord told me that the giants in the land represented challenges.
Now, the reason Joshua and Caleb were positive was evident in their response: they were focused on God’s presence with them, and they believed He was going to help them overcome. Their judgment of the situation before them was based on spiritual realities, not physical ones. The ten spies, however, were focused on the natural — the size of the giants in relation to their own size, concluding they seemed like “grasshoppers” beside them (Numbers 13:33). Joshua and Caleb, by contrast, declared that the Canaanites were “bread” for Israel — theirs to overcome and consume — because the Lord was with them and their enemies’ protection was gone (Numbers 14:9).
God has always admonished His children to fear not, for He is with us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:9; Isaiah 41:10). When we focus on His presence with us, we gain the positive mindset of Joshua and Caleb that enabled them to inherit the promise — for only when we are positive can we inherit promises.
So do not doubt that God is with you and that He will do what He has promised. As it was for Joshua and Caleb, your present challenge shall be bread to you. Thank Him for the victory He has already given.
Prayer Points
Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask Him to help us inherit His promises, and to help us focus on the fact that He is with us, rather than on the challenge before us.
