“…I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” — Psalm 121:1 (KJV)

Years ago, I heard a testimony shared by Bishop David Oyedepo about an encounter where God taught him to trust Him. It was a difficult season in his life, and he was trusting God for provision. However, his hope was in men, as he was expecting certain people to give to him.

One day, God spoke to him and asked, “Can you look up and down at the same time with your natural eyes?” The answer was an obvious no. Then He continued, “Anytime you are looking to man for provision, don’t ever claim you are looking up to Me.” Like Bishop Oyedepo in that season of his life, many Christians place their hope in man instead of God. This is not the will of God.

Though God uses people to help us, we must never see man as our source. It is God’s will that our confidence and hope rest in Him. Even the best of men will fail us; therefore, putting our hope in them leads to disappointment. This is why Scripture says, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man…” (Jeremiah 17:5 KJV).

One person who made this mistake was Lazarus. Scripture records that he was laid at the gate of the rich man, “desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores” (Luke 16:21 KJV). Lazarus placed his expectations on the rich man rather than looking to God for his breakthrough. This state of lack and suffering was not God’s ultimate desire for his life, for Scripture reminds us: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2 KJV). Yet, because Lazarus fixed his eyes on the crumbs of a man rather than on God, he remained in that state until he passed into Abraham’s bosom.

Like Lazarus, many believers have faith for eternal salvation but lack faith for God’s earthly provision. They may make it to heaven while living well below God’s best on earth. We must repent of our unbelief and ask Him for the grace to depend entirely on Him.

Do not trust in men; they can fail. Do not trust in jobs; they can be lost. Do not trust in the systems of this world; they are fleeting. Look up to God alone, and you will be secure.

Prayer Points

  • Thank God for His Word that has come to us today.
  • Ask the Lord to forgive us for the times we have placed our trust and expectations in men rather than in Him.
  • Pray for grace and a steadfast heart to look up to God alone as our ultimate source and provider.
