“So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” — Hebrews 13:6 (NKJV)
The role of helpers in the life of any individual cannot be overemphasised. In Scripture, everyone God gave an assignment to fulfil needed helpers in the form of men—from Moses to David, and even the Apostle Paul. However, the weight and importance of this ministry was most clearly revealed in the life of Jesus Christ.
The greatest work of God toward humanity is the cross. Yet, even in fulfilling this ministry, Jesus received a helper: Scripture records how Simon of Cyrene was compelled to carry the cross of Jesus for a time (Matthew 27:32, Luke 23:26). If Jesus received a helper, you certainly need one. However, there is something vital we must understand: the Lord, not man, is our true helper (Hebrews 13:6 NKJV).
Though God uses people to fulfil the ministry of help, He remains the source of that help. No one, regardless of how good-natured they are, can help you unless God moves their heart to do so. Therefore, while it is important to appreciate the human vessels God uses, we must look beyond them and acknowledge God behind their actions.
Last week, I encountered Hebrews 13:6 again. What struck me was that after the author declares, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear,” he immediately adds, “What can man do to me?” The insight God gave me regarding that phrase is this: even when the human vessels He uses change their minds toward us, or choose not to be obedient to God, He will raise others in their place. Our help comes from Him, not man.
Do not fall into human worship or dependency by failing to recognise that God is the One helping you. Appreciate every vessel He sends your way, but always recognise Him as the ultimate source of your help. He is your Helper.
Prayer Points:
- Let us thank God for His Word today.
- Let us ask Him for the grace to genuinely appreciate the people He sends across our path, while never losing sight of Him as our ultimate source and true Helper.
