2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2
6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Matthew 9:6
In our opening verses above, we see how Jesus healed the paralyzed man by forgiving his sins. This reveals that the man’s sickness was caused by his own sins.
Again, in 1 Corinthians 11:29–31, the Apostle Paul talks about how some were sick because they ate and drank the Holy Communion in an unworthy manner. From these two examples in Scripture, we see that sickness can be tied to one’s sins. Sickness can come as a form of chastisement from God. Does this mean every sickness or difficulty is the result of sin?
In John 9:2–3 the Bible says:
2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.”
Here the sickness was not caused by sin, but was so that the glory of God could be revealed. It was very hard for the disciples to accept that this man’s blindness from birth was not caused by sin, so they asked: who sinned, this man or his parents? Similarly, do we sometimes misjudge people’s misfortunes to mean they have sinned or lack faith or wisdom? Even in the story of Job in the Bible, most of his friends believed he was suffering as a result of his sins.
From this we see that sickness or unpleasant situations can be caused by sin, but sometimes they happen so that the glory of God can be revealed. Therefore, if you are sick or going through an unpleasant situation, what we can do is ask God for mercy in case it is caused by sin, and also thank God, since it may be for His glory. Whatever the case, the Bible tells us it is God’s will for us to give thanks in all situations (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
