It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22–23 KJV)

Have you ever made a mistake and wished you could turn back the hands of time? Perhaps you said something hurtful, made a wrong decision, or disappointed God in an area of your life? Looking at Peter, who denied Jesus three times. By human standards, Peter had failed terribly. Yet Jesus did not abandon him. After His resurrection, the Lord restored Peter and entrusted him with the responsibility of feeding His sheep (John 21:15–17). Your failure does not have to be your final chapter. When you genuinely turn to God, His mercy can restore what guilt and shame have tried to destroy.

In our opening text, we are reminded that we are not consumed because of God’s mercies. This does not mean we will never face consequences for our actions, but it means God does not deal with us solely according to what we deserve. It’s just like a child who falls while learning to walk, a loving parent will not abandon the child because of the fall; instead, they will reach out and help the child stand again. In a much greater way, God’s mercy reaches towards us in our weakness, offering forgiveness, correction, and strength to continue.

Sometimes as human beings, we become so familiar with waking up every morning that we forget it is an expression of God’s mercy. We may not have achieved everything we hoped for, and some of our prayers may still be unanswered, but the fact that God has preserved us is evidence that His mercy is still at work in our lives. That is one of the greatest blessings we enjoy as His children.

Finally, having received mercy from God, we must also learn to show mercy. Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matt 5:7). Perhaps someone has offended you, disappointed you, or failed to meet your expectations. Showing them mercy does not mean approving wrongdoing or letting go of your boundaries. It means refusing to let bitterness control your heart and choosing forgiveness as God enables you.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Father, thank you for your unfailing mercy. Let your mercy speak over my life, my family and all that you have given to me.
