10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,
11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.
(2 Corinthians 2:11)
In the above verse, the Apostle Paul says he forgave so that Satan should not take advantage of them, for they are not ignorant of Satan’s devices. It reveals unforgiveness as one of the devices of the enemy but also that there are other devices and we should be aware of them.
The devices of the enemy are the tools he uses to achieve his purposes and what are those purposes?; to kill, to steal and to destroy (John 10:10 NIV). Ultimately, he wants to prevent people from accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour or take them out of the faith. In christ we have an assurance and our confidence must be in God to keep us, but still we must be aware there is an ongoing battle for our souls and play our part in abiding in Christ (1 Peter 5:8).
As it was mentioned in the call to prayer yesterday, one of the things the devil attacks is unity in the church because he is well aware of the power of unity and the great impact the church has when it is united. So he uses his schemes or devices to bring about division in the church. Some of these schemes of division are unforgiveness and naturing of malice or keeping records of wrongs which eventually pile up. He pokes each member through egoistic or self-centred thoughts.
Another bait or scheme of the enemy is what the bible calls the little foxes (Song of Solomon 2:15) or the little yeast (Galatians 5:9). I am looking specifically at the small sinful habits. Gradually, the Devil would introduce or present such habits as not that bad but the plan from the start is build up to more and more grievous sins that would eventually turn your heart away from God. Don’t entertain so called small sin. Would Jesus be ok with this? May God help us.
Another of the Devil’s device are the pretenders and imposters. The wolf is sheep clothing! Those who go into christian gatherings with evil motives but pretending to be righteous or give an appearance of godliness.
So these and many more are the schemes of the enemy. As believers we ought to be wiser than the devil so that he does not outsmart or trick us. The bible says if we lack wisdom we should ask for it (James 1:5). That’s because we desperately need it. And we are to continue to ask for Wisdom even if we think we are wise.
Prayer Points:
- Let’s thank God for the word today.
- Let’s ask God for wisdom to recognise and not fall into the devils schemes of disunity and others.
