Discipline can be defined as the act of subjecting one’s flesh to obey set rules, such as subjecting oneself to the counsel of the word of God. In our opening verse, the word “godliness” is used, but this is almost the same as saying “discipline”. In fact, both the word disciple and discipline share the same Latin root word “discere”, which means to learn.
Jesus said to come after him, which means to be His disciple; we must deny ourselves and carry our crosses and follow him(Matthew 16:24). Therefore, as believers, we are called to a lifestyle of discipline. But He gives us access to His grace (the empowerment), and the rewards of discipline not only occur in this life but also in the life to come (1 Timothy 4:5).
Without discipline, one cannot achieve the best in any field of life, whether as an Athlete or a Believer. An Athlete needs to reject the temptation to eat what is not good for his/her fitness to be in the best form. Similarly, a Believer needs to reject and flee from sexual immorality to avoid sinning against God and against men.
On earth, discipline leads to excellence, success and eventually riches. Yet this discipline some may limit to just diligence at school or professional work. However, the Lord has also faithfully promised us rewards for those who diligently seek Him, which is discipline or being a disciple (Hebrews 11:6).
Even with a talent (like a football talent), without discipline the talent won’t amount to much. Similarly, as believers, we are saved through faith in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, Salvation can be lost if we don’t persist in discipline but give in continually to sin (Hebrews 10:26).
As believers, we build our discipline through the hearing of the word of God often, asking God in prayer with thanksgiving and also developing and maintaining good habits.

- Let’s thank God for this word today.
- Let’s ask the Lord to help us continue to diligently seek Him.
