“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
Matthew 24:5 KJV

When the disciples asked Jesus Christ about the signs of the end time and of His coming in Matthew 24, one recurring statement in His response was “deception”. The end time is a period when the devil will be very active in deceiving people. How then do we stand guard against him?

One of the things we were told to expect before Christ comes is the great falling away — the falling away of a great number of people from the faith (2 Thes. 2:3). This event is linked to the activities of the man of sin, through whom Satan will bring deception at that time. From what was said by Jesus Christ and the Apostle Paul, one area in which deception will occur is in the identity of Jesus Christ.

When Scripture says, “many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ” (Matthew 24:5 KJV), it shows that the devil will attempt to remove people’s faith from the true Jesus and redirect it to a false Christ whom many will believe in. Remember also that the man of sin will exalt himself above all that is called God, showing himself to be God (2 Thes. 2:4). Putting your faith in a false god will take you out of Christ.

Another area of deception the enemy will bring is the belief that there are no consequences for sin. This was what he told Eve when he persuaded her to eat of the forbidden fruit, saying, “You shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). Many people will believe this in the end time. However, Scripture says:

“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men” (1 Corinthians 6:9).

The key to overcoming deception is wisdom (Proverbs 20:1). As you spend time in the Word of God, you will gain the wisdom to be able to reject evil and accept what is good (Isaiah 7:15).

Let us thank God for His Word today. Let us ask Him to give us the wisdom that will help us avoid being deceived in these end times.
