4ย Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5ย It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ย (1 Corinthians 13:4-7. NIV)
Last week, we read about an attribute of love, which is โnot being easily angeredโ. Today, we will be highlighting another attribute, which is: love does not keep record of wrongs.
You might have come across the debate as to whether we are to forgive and forget or forgive but not forget. First, being honest to scriptures, as you can see from our anchor verse above, it says โit keeps no record of wrongsโ, which is synonymous with forgetting. Again, if we look at the command Christ gave us, He said, โlove as I have loved youโ, and Hebrews 8:12 says:ย
For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.
From this, we see that God, through Christ Jesus, forgives us and does not keep record of our wrongs, and Jesus has commanded us to love as He has loved us, which means forgiving others and remembering their sins no more.
Again, the need to forget is a matter of practicality. If you forgive and keep a record, the record can be a source of temptation to lead you to be offended once again. Each time you dwell on the memory, you could revive the hurt and put yourself in a challenge to forgive again. So itโs not that when you forgive, the memory is erased immediately, but by not dwelling on it again or revisiting the past, it gradually fades away.
However, as humans, we have the ability to learn from bad situations and improve our security, and Jesus didnโt call us to restrain this ability either, but rather to exploit it fully, for He said in Mathew 10:16
16ย Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
The ability to learn from the wrongs others do to you and make adjustments for your security is an aspect of being wise. It might need us to remember a little of the wrong, but more importantly, taking the lesson and not holding on bitterly to the past and not keeping full details.ย
So in conclusion, yes, we are to forgive and forget as God does to us through Christ. But we can also learn lessons from peopleโs evil acts toward us, and sometimes need a small reminder to know how to deal with them for our safety and even theirs. (See what Jesus said in John 2:24)
Prayer Point:ย
- Letโs thank God for the word today.
- Letโs pray for God to help us obey Him to forgive as He has forgiven us, and not revisit the past.
- Letโs pray for wisdom to know when we need to remember a little bit of the evils others did to us in order to take precautions without holding on bitterly or seeking vengeance. ย
