“The Lord is not slow… but is longsuffering toward us”
(2 Peter 3:9).

There are seasons in our walk with God when He calls us to wait, to watch, and to prepare. In Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus tells the Parable of the Ten Virgins to remind us that readiness is not a one-time event—it is a daily posture of the heart.

Ten virgins went out to meet the bridegroom. All carried lamps. All expected His coming. All had the appearance of readiness. But as Jesus said earlier,  “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:16). The outward appearance was the same, but the inner preparation was different.

The bridegroom delayed, and it was in the delay that the true condition of each heart became evident. Five wise virgins carried extra oil—five foolish virgins did not. Their lack of preparation only became obvious when the midnight cry sounded:

“Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!”
(Matthew 25:6)

The wise rose with confidence. Their lamps were burning because they had supplied themselves with enough oil. The foolish, however, found themselves empty and desperate. They begged for oil, but the wise replied, “No…there will not be enough for us and you” (Matthew 25:9). Just as salvation and intimacy with God are deeply personal, so is the “oil” of the Spirit-filled life. It cannot be borrowed.

This truth echoes Paul’s words:
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”
(Philippians 2:12).

No one can give you their devotion, their obedience, or their spiritual depth. These must be cultivated in your own walk with God.

The delay of the bridegroom does not mean abandonment. Scripture reminds us:

“The Lord is not slow… but is longsuffering toward us”
(2 Peter 3:9).

His delay is mercy. It is an invitation to grow, repent, deepen, and align ourselves with His purposes. But the delay will not last forever. The midnight cry will come—suddenly, unexpectedly—just as Jesus taught:

“For the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
(Matthew 24:44)

When the foolish finally returned, the door was already shut. The bridegroom’s answer was heartbreaking:
_“Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.”_
(Matthew 25:12)
Not because He didn’t want them, but because they were not ready when grace called.

Today, God invites you to keep your lamp burning. To stay filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). To remain watchful in prayer (Matthew 26:41). To keep your faith alive even when the world around you sleeps.

Let your heart stay awake. Let your spirit stay full.
Let your lamp never go out.

Prayer Points

Let’s thank God for His word.
