So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. ย Numbers 21:9 (NIV)

Recently, I learned of someone who went to the hospital for treatment. After taking medication for a while with only minor improvement, he decided to contact traditional healers for help. However, as he was about to make the call, the Holy Spirit spoke to him and said, โ€œYou have tried man before, and now you are about to try man again. Why donโ€™t you try Me? Give Me four weeks.โ€

Many times, when we pass through challengesโ€”including challenges related to our healthโ€”Christians are tempted to look to the systems of men for help instead of looking to God. This is similar to what King Asa did in the thirty-ninth year of his reign as king of Judah. When he became sick, he did not seek the Lord as he had done in his earlier years during times of trial, but instead sought help only from the physicians of his day. This was counted against him by God.

When we are sick, our first response should not be to run to man, but to turn to God. Just as the Israelites did when they were bitten by snakes in the wildernessโ€”they were instructed to look at the bronze snake hanging on a pole, and all who looked were healed (Numbers 21:9)โ€”we are to look up to Jesus, who was hung on a tree, and by whose stripes we are healed (1 Peter 2:24).

Doctors can fail, but God never fails. Though God may sometimes choose to heal through doctors, we should come to Him first. He will instruct us whether to simply trust Him for healing or to seek medical help.

Prayer Points
Let us thank God for His word today.
Let us ask Him to help us trust Him for our healing.
