And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you. — 2 Chronicles 24:20 (KJV)

Some years ago, the Lord told me, “I want to make you a man that can move forward.” For a long time, I wondered what “moving forward” meant in the context of what He said. After some time, I encountered 2 Chronicles 24:20, where the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, to confront King Joash after he turned away from following God.

In Zechariah’s statement, the direct consequence of the king and the people transgressing God’s commandments was that they could not prosper (2 Chronicles 24:20; see also Deuteronomy 28:15, 29). The word prosper here translates from the Hebrew root tsâlach (tsâlêach), which carries the primitive meaning “to push forward” or “to break out.” This is the same root word used in Joshua 1:8, where God promised Joshua good success and prosperity if he meditated on the Book of the Law and observed all that was written in it.

To move forward in life—to truly prosper—is fundamentally linked to obedience to God’s instructions. When Isaac obeyed God’s directive to remain in Gerar during a time of famine rather than going down to Egypt, Scripture records:

“And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.” — Genesis 26:13 (KJV)

Isaac moved forward because he obeyed.

One of the greatest hindrances to moving forward is idolatry. An idol is anything that hinders wholehearted obedience to God—anything we love, trust, or fear more than Him. An idol can be a career, a relationship, an ambition, or even a personal desire. Whenever we compromise or refuse God’s will out of excessive affection or fear, that object or person becomes an idol, halting our spiritual and personal progress.

As believers, we must ask God to cleanse our hearts of every idol—anything exalted above His will. To walk in the true prosperity found in Christ, we must cultivate hearts yielded in swift and steady obedience to His voice.

Prayer Points

  • Let us thank God for His Word today.
  • Let us ask Him to purify our hearts of anything that stands in the way of our obedience to Him.
  • Let us also ask for the grace to put Him first and follow His instructions wholeheartedly, so that nothing will hinder us from moving forward in His purpose for our lives.
