18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”   Luke 10:18-20

Many Christians still fear the forces of darkness or Satan so much, even though they have come to believe in Jesus Christ and have put their faith in Him. This is as a result of the ignorance of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary for those who believe in Him (John 19:28-30).

One thing we must know is that no one is above God, and Jesus, who is God and yet the Son of God, has all authority, being God. The Devil does not and cannot fight against God or Jesus, per se. Because Jesus is the Creator and the Devil is a creature. The Devil is simply permitted to act against the will of God.

We humans, on the other hand, do not inherently have such authority over everything, but when we become a part of Jesus by accepting Him as our Lord and saviour, we now have authority through Christ over all the power of the enemy. The bible tells us the church is the body of Christ, and Christ is our head. You are part of the church or the body of Christ if your faith is in Christ (John 10:16). And because you are in Christ, you share in the authority of Christ (John 10:34-36, Psalm 82:5-8).

Our access to this authority in Christ was paid for when Jesus died for our sins and rose again.

However, what use is our power and authority if we don’t know about it, nor do we exercise it?

Imagine you had a house but did not know it belonged to you. A thief or an opportunist could lay hold of your belongings until you know and claim what is rightfully yours.

Similarly, we as Christians are to know and exercise our authority in Christ. We are to know that we have been given authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. We are to exercise that authority by casting out demons, healing the sick, commanding circumstances blocking our path to fulfilling God’s instruction to be adjusted e.t.c. All in Jesus’ name.

It takes faith. Faith, not in ourselves but in who He is and in the authority He has given us. Command that mountain to move today (Matthew 17:20).

However, let’s not forget that heaven ultimately is the goal, not just power.

Prayer Point:

  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Let’s pray that God will help all believers to spend time hearing and studying the bible so that they can know their inheritance in Christ Jesus.
  • Let’s pray that God will help us exercise our faith in Jesus and give commands in His name.
