27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 NIV
Peace is a state of calmness, serenity, and harmony either between people or internally in a person. Peace of mind is probably a highly underrated treasure. In Christ, we have the peace that Christ gives. A peace that the world cannot give.
A church father named Saint Augustine wrote: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Just as Jesus said, “my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives”. But he also added, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” The second phrase tells us that though He gives us peace, we also have a responsibility: not to let our hearts be troubled or afraid.
So the trouble comes, or the reason to be afraid appears, but we don’t let it trouble us or make us afraid; rather, we encourage ourselves with His word, just as David did and pray (Psalm 42:5).
As believers in Christ, peace has become our rightful possession, our right, our heritage. We not only need it for ourselves but also to dispense it to others. A man with no peace within will likely not give peace to others.
We need peace to be able to judge and act rightly, for the bible says:
“15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
When worries or anxiety try to steal our peace, the word of God tells us how to reclaim our peace: through prayer and thanksgiving.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
We also need moments of stillness to let God give us clarity in the place of worries, doubts and fears. “Be still and know that I am God…”(Psalm 46:10)
Sin also steals our peace, but if we repent and turn to the Lord, we return to His peace.
However, the wicked can develop a false kind of peace. A peace that is sustained by evil doing. The bible says we must avoid such people lest they corrupt us. Proverbs 4:14-16
14Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evildoers.
15Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they cannot rest until they do evil;
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.
Prayer Points:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s ask the Lord to help us safeguard His peace in prayer and meditating on His word.
