No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. โ€” 1 Corinthians 9:27 (NIV)

In this journey of life, we come in contact with many people. However, in the end, each of us will stand alone before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of our actions. For this reason, we must ensure that the people we meet during our time on earth are not the reason we are rejected at the end.

The early disciples and apostles understood one thing: salvation is the start of a journey, not an end in itself. When we give our lives to Christ, we are enlisted in a race whose outcome will be determined at our last breath on earth. This understanding made them live with the consciousness that there would be judgment at the end, which would determine their fate in eternity.

Apostle Paul, who was an ambassador of the grace of God, said something important when he wrote to the Corinthians. He said, โ€œ…I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prizeโ€ (1 Corinthians 9:27 NIV). This statement suggests that, despite being a preacher, there was still a possibility of being rejected at the end. To avoid this, he disciplined his flesh and subjected it to obedience.

Like Paul, we must learn to think about the end even as we do the work of the ministry and interact with others during our time on earth. We should not allow the actions or inactions of people to affect our relationship with God, no matter how close they are to us. The fact that Eve was the reason Adam sinned did not stop him from being judged. On the last day, finger-pointing will not be permitted.

We owe everyone love, and we have been instructed to follow peace with all men (Romans 12:18; Hebrews 12:14). However, we must ensure that no one becomes the reason we sin against God.

Prayer Points

  1. Let us thank God for His word today.
  2. Let us ask Him to help us remain faithful to Him in this wicked world.
