Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. (Psalm 42:11 KJV)

The circumstances surrounding the birth of David and his growing-up years must have been traumatising for him. He would probably have asked his father why he had to be the one to look after the flock in the desert. As the lastborn of the home, he didn’t enjoy any special privilege; instead, he was saddled with the responsibility of managing the family business even though he had older siblings who could take that role. He had no companion to share his pain and burden with. It was this isolation that drove him to God.

He chose to turn to God in his darkest season, and God in turn drew him close, became his father, mentored him, guided him, strengthened him, chose him and crowned him king over Israel. An unwanted last child that looked like a disgrace and stain to the family of Jesse now became the one that put the family name in the history books, and we are still reading about them because David chose to turn his pain into a desperate journey in search of God.

Loss in any form is very difficult to deal with, and grief is a wound in the heart. The situation you may have found yourself in may be unbearable; sometimes it brings tears to your eyes, and you have questions that need urgent answers, but it seems God is very far and you are all alone. For some, you may be passing through a trying time at work or in your marriage, relationship, ministry, business, health or academics. Every season has a beginning and an end. It is what you do in those times that will determine whether you will come out stronger. God is never far away, and He sees through your pain.

The fatherhood of God that is full of compassion makes Him to respond when we call on Him in our darkest hours. It is in those times that God will speak words of comfort and assurance that He is there and, if necessary, gives instructions on the next steps. Pain, loss, health challenge, financial bankruptcy, depression, broken home etc are all avenues to run to the maker like David did so He can intervene and shape us into becoming what He wants for our lives. Also, it will be terrible not to learn wisdom from that dark season.

In conclusion, the dark times are designed to lead into glorious mornings if we align with the owner of the night and the day with all our hearts and souls.

Prayer point:

  • Let us thank God for the Word today.
  • Let us ask for grace to find God when we go through dark times.
