23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.   Colossians 3:23-24 NIV

Perhaps you can relate to having this experience as a child. You wanted to do the dishes, then suddenly you were scolded and instructed to do the dishes, which you already intended to do. It suddenly became very difficult to do, because what would have been your wilful gesture had been turned into an imposed task.

Serving joyfully is not something one should be threatened to do. After all, whether you serve joyfully or not, at least you are better than one who does not do it at all, and therefore deserve a reward for doing it.

However, when you serve with joy, you can get the full reward of your service and more (1 Peter 4:13). Serving with joy comes with the right motivation, and the word of God gives us the best motivation, which is serving, knowing that you are working for the Lord.

Serving with Joy makes work feel lighter. As in the earlier example I gave, the same dishes could have been done with ease, but because the moral was killed, it became much harder than it really is.

Is your job too demanding, or have you just lost morale? As the word encourages us, serve as though you are working for the Lord, not human masters. I have heard people quit their nursing profession because of the stress they went through, and I can’t judge, but I ask: was nursing a job or a calling? Surely convenience does not equate to fulfilling purpose, nor do I say fulfilling purpose equates to stress. But in whatever we do, it is best that we see God and be led by Him.

Men may discourage you from your service, but we are serving the Lord Jesus, who died for our sins so that those who believe can obtain eternal life. No pay is compared to eternal life. The word of God promises us that God rewards every good thing we do in His name. He is a faithful rewarder.

Serving God is not limited to what you do in church. Even your job, even serving your partner, is a service to God, and indeed, everywhere we serve, we can do it for Jesus, knowing that it is the Lord we are serving.

Prayer Point:

  • Let’s thank God for His gift of salvation.
  • Let’s ask God to help us to do every work joyfully, knowing that it is the Lord we are serving.
