“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
As my wife and I were reading the Scriptures recently, the Lord showed me that there are unseen forces operating behind the scenes that influence the actions of people. These influences can be either godly or demonic. Understanding this truth should make us more watchful and discerning concerning our thoughts, desires, and actions.
When the prophet Elisha declared that food would become abundant and inexpensive despite the severe famine in Samaria, God chose four lepers outside the city to become instruments for the fulfilment of His word. Although they had no knowledge of Elisha’s prophecy, it came into their hearts to go to the camp of the Syrians, even at the risk of losing their lives. They did not realise that God was directing their steps to bring His word to pass. What seemed like their own decision was, in fact, God’s providential leading. (2 Kings 7:1–8)
On the other hand, after David sinned, God sent Nathan the prophet to pronounce judgment upon his house, declaring that the sword would never depart from it. (2 Samuel 12:7–10). In time, Amnon developed a sinful desire for his half-sister Tamar. From his perspective, he may have believed he was simply following his emotions, but those corrupt desires became the means through which God’s judgment upon David’s house unfolded.
That his passion was not genuine love became evident immediately after he violated Tamar. The affection he claimed to have instantly turned into intense hatred. (2 Samuel 13:1–15) This reminds us that sinful desires are often deceptive and can become instruments through which Satan seeks to accomplish destruction. Like Amnon, many people are manipulated into actions that ultimately bring sorrow, judgment, and ruin.
The question we must ask ourselves is this: Who is influencing my actions—God or the enemy?
One way to discern the source of an influence is by examining where it leads. If you are being prompted toward sin, disobedience, bitterness, pride, or anything contrary to God’s Word, that influence is not from God. But if you are being led toward righteousness, holiness, love, obedience, and truth, then God is at work in your heart.
Consider this: if Amnon had recognised that his desire for Tamar was sinful and had immediately cried out to God for mercy and strength to resist it, would he have fallen into that sin? The answer is no. God always gives grace to those who seek Him sincerely. Likewise, whenever we recognise sinful thoughts or desires rising within us, we should not entertain them. Instead, we should pray against them, submit ourselves to God, and rely on His grace to overcome.
Beloved, be watchful. There are spiritual forces seeking vessels through whom they can accomplish their purposes. Do not yield yourself to the enemy. Instead, continually surrender yourself to the Holy Spirit, so that your life may become an instrument for God’s glory.
