Title: The Hindrances to Forgiveness

Recently, I heard an account from someone who said the Lord took him in a vision to hell. He was surprised to find people there who had professed faith in Christ, including a woman who had been a powerful evangelist. When he asked why she was there, he said the Lord told him that although many came to Christ through her ministry, she refused to forgive and was lost. This experience reminds us of Paul’s warning that after preaching to others, he himself did not want to become disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27).
One reason many struggle to forgive is that they confuse forgiveness with reconciliation. Forgiveness is a command, but reconciliation requires repentance, wisdom, and restored trust. Forgiving someone does not mean you must allow them back into your life if they continue in harmful behaviour.
Others refuse to forgive because they think the offender will escape God’s judgement. But forgiveness does not cancel God’s justice. It gives the offender an opportunity to repent, and if they refuse, God will judge righteously. Stephen prayed for those who stoned him, and later Saul, who witnessed his death, became the Apostle Paul. Forgiveness leaves room for God’s saving grace.
Finally, many fail to forgive because they do not realise that forgiveness sets them free. Unforgiveness is sin and is contrary to the love Christ commands. It keeps believers in bondage to bitterness and can affect them spiritually, emotionally, and even physically. When we forgive, we release ourselves from that bondage and walk in the freedom God desires for us.
Beloved, forgiveness is not merely a suggestion—it is a command from our Lord. Do not allow another person’s offence to cost you your peace, your freedom, or your fellowship with God. Choose to forgive today.

- Let’s thank God for forgiving us through Christ.
- Let’s ask Him to give us the grace to forgive those who have wronged us.
- Let’s ask Him to remove every root of bitterness from our hearts and help us walk in love, wisdom, and freedom.
