His officials said to him, โ€œLook, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.โ€
1 Kings 20:31 (NIV)

When God intends to exalt you to a position of authority, He usually takes you through a process. One of the things God achieves in us during this process is a heart that is merciful and compassionate, as we need these qualities to rule well.

One of the most wicked kings in Israel was Ahab (1 Kings 16:30), the husband of Jezebel. Ahab was encouraged by Jezebel in his evil acts, so much so that the prophets of God in Israel were either dead or afraid to practise publicly, except Elijah. However, when King Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria, was in hiding during wartime, his servants encouraged him to face Ahab, saying, โ€œWe have heard that the kings of Israel are mercifulโ€ (1 Kings 20:31, NIV). Ben-Hadad came out, and truly Ahab had mercy on him (1 Kings 20:32โ€“34).

If the most wicked king in Israel was described as merciful by a Gentileโ€”and he actually acted mercifullyโ€”it goes to show how much God takes His time to develop this attribute in them. Even our Lord went through a process to develop a heart of mercy, as Scripture says, โ€œFor this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the peopleโ€ (Hebrews 2:17).

By our salvation, we have become part of the commonwealth of Israel, as we are heirs of the same promises (Ephesians 3:6). Being described as kings and priests (Revelation 1:6), God takes us through a process before exaltation, just like the kings of Israel, so that we may become merciful. This process often involves painful seasons and delays.

Some years ago, when I was experiencing a prolonged trial, I wondered why God allowed it to happen. In a vision, I saw โ€œKings of Israel,โ€ where He made me understand that He allowed the situation to help me develop a heart of mercy, like the kings of Israel.

Stay strong. God is using that situation to form His image in you.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him to help us see Him in our situations and to help us endure until the end, for we know He is working good in us.
