Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.“โ€“ James 1:2-4 NIV

For some days now, I have been speaking on the purpose of pain. On Monday, I revealed that God allows us to experience pain so that the hearts of the people around us will be revealed, as indicated in Luke 2:35. Yesterday, I also revealed that God allows us to experience pain so that we can share in His glory (Romans 8:17).

Now, God also allows us to experience pain so our character will be refined. This was revealed in James 1:2-4, where it was stated that trials produce perseverance, which is a character virtue. Again, when James said, “that you may be mature,” it suggests that suffering (the trials of life) is one of the ways in which God matures us. A fully mature Christian is Christ-like in character.

When God led the children of Israel through the wilderness, Moses said, “Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands” (Deuteronomy 8:2). The wilderness season is a time when we are being tested before the fulfillment of His promises. From Moses’s speech, God allows it to “humble us,” and humility is a Christ-like character.

Finally, Apostle Peter said, “Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin” (1 Peter 4:1). This shows that suffering in the flesh brings an end to sin. Clearly, God can allow His children to feel the pain of suffering to help them manifest His character and to stop sinning. So, our response to such experiences should be thanksgiving, for we know they are working good in us.

Prayer Points

  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Let’s ask Him to help us thank Him for the trials of life, knowing that God allows them to help us manifest His character.
