“And a sword will pierce your own soul too, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Luke 2:35 (BSB)

The intentionality of God is seen in every area of His creationโ€”nothing exists without a purpose. This does not only apply to plants, animals, or weather conditions; it also includes the pain and suffering He allows His children to experience. There is a purpose even for pain.

When the parents of Jesus Christ encountered Simeon in Luke 2, he spoke many things about the Child. Yet he did not stop until he told Mary: โ€œAnd a sword will pierce your own soul too, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealedโ€ (Luke 2:35 BSB). The sword going through the soul of Mary represents the emotional pain she was to endure. I believe this was fulfilled at the foot of the cross when she beheld the suffering and death of Jesus (John 19:25).

A mother watching her son being killed would surely experience deep pain in her soul. Yet this pain was not without purposeโ€”so that the thoughts of many hearts might be revealed. Often, at the lowest points in life, you come to know the true hearts of the people around you. Those who sincerely love you will be there to comfort you, while those who despise you will distance themselves. This was part of the reason God allowed a sword to pierce the heart of Mary.

When Apostle Paul came to the Galatians, there are indications from Scripture that he had problems with his eyes, which may have been why he visited Galatia for treatment (Galatians 4:13). However, Paul later revealed the purpose of this illness when he said, โ€œEven though my illness was a trial to youโ€ฆโ€ (Galatians 4:14). In other words, his sickness became a test for the Galatiansโ€”to see how they would treat him.

The Galatians passed this test. Paul went on to say, โ€œโ€ฆyou did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus Himselfโ€ (Galatians 4:14). This act endeared the hearts of the Galatians to Paul and moved him to intercede for them later when they were at a low point, as they were almost being cut off from Christ by believing the wrong message (Galatians 5:2).

Years ago, someone wrote some demeaning things about me on our ministry WhatsApp group. At that time, there was no option to delete messages, so everyone saw it. After that incident, many people stopped attending our meetings because of the scandalous message. However, some remained, and their commitment was unwavering despite what they had read. Together, we have accomplished greater things, even though we became fewer in number.

What the enemy meant to use to break me became a means through which the hearts of people were revealed. Those whose hearts were sincere towards the work were made known. Truly, there is a purpose for your pain.
