While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 NIV
The love of God toward His creation knows no bounds. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23, ESV). Even while we were still sinners, He loved us deeply and sacrificially. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV). How much more now, as His redeemed children, does His love abound toward us?
God’s love is overwhelming, not because we deserve it, but because it flows from who He is. “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them” (1 John 4:16, NIV). He loves not based on merit, but by His divine nature. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19, ESV).
His love is unconditional—and so must ours be. Jesus commands us: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31, NIV), and “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you” (John 13:34, ESV). Whether it is toward our neighbors, our enemies (Matthew 5:44), or our spouses (Ephesians 5:25), love must be given freely, without conditions, just as God freely gave His love to us.
So, I implore you, brethren, to love as God has loved you and me.
Love gives!
Love forgives!
Love forbears!
