2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Genesis 2:2 NKJV
17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” John 5:17 NKJV
As you read through scriptures, you will notice the pattern of God’s call to rest in Him and, at the same time, to work for Him. God exalts us to work but also calls us to rest in Him. This is a duality of our calling in Christ: Work, but rest. In other words, work from rest.
Take, for instance, this passage from Matthew 11:28-30
28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus says in the above passage that we should come, and He will give us rest, but He also says we should take upon his yoke, which is work.
Let’s take another, 2 Timothy 1:7:
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
If you are given a spirit of power, it means you are given a spirit to work, and a sound mind enables you to rest well.
So this reminds us that it is important for us to work and to rest without neglecting either. When you rest well, you can work well, and also when you work well, you can rest well. The rest is needed not just in your body but also in your soul (Or mind or heart). The soul’s rest is what you can also call peace of mind. There are encouragements, comforts and assurances we get from the word of God which gives us peace of mind.
Sometimes you could be so overzealous in the doings of the kingdom like Martha that you begin to think that simple things like worshipping the Lord Jesus or listening to His word are less important whereas they are the most important (see Luke 10: 38-42).
In his third appearance to the Apostles, Jesus made breakfast for them before talking about the mission that Peter had to do. This shows that the Lord cares about your physical wellbeing or that you are rested.
However, there is work to be done, and we can’t just be resting without working. As scriptures say:
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 NIV
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for this word today. Let’s ask the Lord to help us to learn to work from rest as He has called and empowered us to.
