Before there were kings in Israel, the following kings ruled Edom one after another.
Genesis 36:31 (KJV)
The story of Esau and Jacob (Israel) is one that helps us discern Godโs blessings in our lives. Often, people judge by appearance and miss out on Godโs best for them.
Esau and Jacob were sons of the same parents; in fact, they were twins. When their mother was pregnant with them, the Lord said to her, โTwo nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.โ (Genesis 25:23 NIV).
In the course of time, Jacob received the blessing from his father in place of Esau, even though he was the younger. Though Esau also received a blessing, it was simply a promise that he would eventually break free from his younger brotherโs rule (Genesis 27:40). However, twenty years later, when Esau and Jacob met again, Esau had an army of four hundred men, while Jacob was only with his family (Genesis 32โ33).
From the outward appearance at their meeting, Esau seemed richer than Jacob, who carried the blessing from Isaac. In fact, Scripture mentions that there were kings in Esau (Edom) before there were any in Jacob (Israel). An observer might have concluded that Esau was more blessed than Jacob because he appeared to be in a better financial position.
However, despite the fact that there were already kings in Edom before there were kings in Israel, the kings of Israel later ruled over the kings of Edom. In hindsight, Israel became far richer than Edom. From this, we see that being the first to manifest is not the same as being more blessed, and that better is the end of a thing than its beginning (Ecclesiastes 7:8).
The construction of a small building and a great house may begin at the same time, yet the smaller one is completed first. Just because others seem to be ahead of you in certain areas of life does not mean they are more blessed. Sometimes, the delay in manifestation is because God is working in you, just as He worked in the kings of Israel.
It is not about how things begin, but how they end. Set your heart on the joy at the end, not on the pain of the process.
Prayer Points
Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him to help us not to compare ourselves with others and to trust that He is working in us, even when things seem delayed.
