โ€œAnd if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.โ€ ย  Romans 8:17 (KJV)

Yesterday, I revealed that God has a purpose for everything, including the pain He allows His children to experience. I also explained that God sometimes uses our pain to reveal the hearts of people towards us, using what Simeon told Mary in Luke 2:35 as an example.

Another reason God allows His children to suffer or experience pain is so that He may be glorified through them. Suffering and glory are like two sides of the same coin. In Romans 8:17, Apostle Paul wrote, โ€œโ€ฆif so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together,โ€ making suffering a condition for being glorified with Him.

Imagine God being like a valuable liquid in a vessel that is not transparent. No matter how precious that liquid is, its true value will not be known as long as it remains inside an unlabelled, non-transparent bottle. That bottle represents us, the believers. With God in us, eager to be revealed to the world so that others may come to Him, God sometimes needs to break us so that the valuable liquid (symbolising His presence in us) can be poured out and seen. God breaks us through the trials of life, yet we are not destroyed.

This is why Apostle Paul said, โ€œWe are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despairโ€ (2 Corinthians 4:8 KJV).

For example, while in chains for the Gospel, Apostle Paul was involved in a shipwreck while being transferred to Rome (Acts 27:41โ€“44). After surviving the wreck, he was bitten by a viper while trying to make a fire (Acts 28:3โ€“6).

When the people of Malta saw this, they initially thought he must be a criminal receiving divine punishment. However, when they observed that he did not die from the snake bite, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god. Paul’s trials became a means through which the power of God was revealed.

The same can be said of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who faced life-threatening situations through which God was revealed and proclaimed by foreign kings (Daniel 3:24โ€“29; Daniel 6:25โ€“27).

Jesus Himself, speaking about the sickness of Lazarus, said:
โ€œโ€ฆThis sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified through it.โ€
John 11:4 (NIV)

The painful situation you are experiencing may very well be for the glory of God.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him to help us believe that the situations He allows in our lives are opportunities for His glory to be revealed through us.
