Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
Matthew 8:3 NIV
Reading through the life and acts of Jesus Christ, we find that everything He did or said was intentional, revealing aspects of Himself.
At one time, when He healed a man who was sick, He chose to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” instead of simply saying, “Get up and walk.” When the people questioned His words, He replied, “…I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (see Matthew 9). His response confirms that He is intentional with both His words and actions.
When healing a leprous man in Matthew 8, Jesus Christ did something that, though it may seem unnecessary, was a profound demonstration of His love. When the leprous man expressed his desire to be healed, the Scriptures record that Jesus “reached out His hand and touched the man” (Matthew 8:3), before commanding him to be clean.
To understand the significance of this act, we must recognize that leprosy was contagious. As a result, those afflicted were separated from society. Under the Old Covenant, they were required to live outside the camp. The touch of Jesus Christ was not what brought the healing—rather, it was His command, “Be clean.” So why was the touch necessary, especially considering the contagious nature of the disease?
By touching the leprous man—who had experienced rejection throughout the duration of his condition—Jesus Christ demonstrated His acceptance of him, despite his state. His action reflects the Scripture that says, “There is no fear in love” (1 John 4:18), and “…while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Like Jesus Christ, we must learn to accept people even in their weakness, as this demonstrates the sincerity of our love.
