Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. โ€œI am willing,โ€ He said. โ€œBe clean!โ€ Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
Matthew 8:3 NIV

Reading through the life and acts of Jesus Christ, we find that everything He did or said was intentional, revealing aspects of Himself.

At one time, when He healed a man who was sick, He chose to say, โ€œYour sins are forgiven,โ€ instead of simply saying, โ€œGet up and walk.โ€ When the people questioned His words, He replied, โ€œโ€ฆI want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sinsโ€ (see Matthew 9). His response confirms that He is intentional with both His words and actions.

When healing a leprous man in Matthew 8, Jesus Christ did something that, though it may seem unnecessary, was a profound demonstration of His love. When the leprous man expressed his desire to be healed, the Scriptures record that Jesus โ€œreached out His hand and touched the manโ€ (Matthew 8:3), before commanding him to be clean.

To understand the significance of this act, we must recognize that leprosy was contagious. As a result, those afflicted were separated from society. Under the Old Covenant, they were required to live outside the camp. The touch of Jesus Christ was not what brought the healingโ€”rather, it was His command, โ€œBe clean.โ€ So why was the touch necessary, especially considering the contagious nature of the disease?

By touching the leprous manโ€”who had experienced rejection throughout the duration of his conditionโ€”Jesus Christ demonstrated His acceptance of him, despite his state. His action reflects the Scripture that says, โ€œThere is no fear in loveโ€ (1 John 4:18), and โ€œโ€ฆwhile we were still sinners, Christ died for usโ€ (Romans 5:8).

Like Jesus Christ, we must learn to accept people even in their weakness, as this demonstrates the sincerity of our love.
