Title: Salvation is Personal

“But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” — 1 Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV)
One of the greatest responsibilities of every believer is to guard his or her own salvation. While we are called to encourage, correct, and restore others, we must never allow another person’s actions or failures to become an excuse for our own disobedience. On the day we stand before Christ, each of us will give an account of our own life.
Some time ago, I watched a deliverance session where there was a man whose wife was discovered in an adulterous relationship. Overwhelmed with anger, shame, and bitterness, he concluded that if she had been unfaithful to him, then he also had the right to be unfaithful to her. He deliberately entered into an adulterous relationship, believing he was only paying her back with the same measure she had used against him.
During the deliverance session, God revealed something that left him broken. His wife had not willingly set out to commit that act. She had been spiritually manipulated and lured into the sin through the workings of witchcraft. Although she still needed repentance and restoration, what happened was not the deliberate rebellion he had imagined. While the woman sinned unintentionally, he sinned intentionally, making his actions even more grievous before God.
What a sobering lesson! Even if someone sins against us intentionally, we are never authorised to respond with sin. The evil another person commits can never become the justification for our own disobedience. Scripture never teaches us to repay sin with sin. Instead, we are to overcome evil with good. Vengeance belongs to the Lord, and righteousness must remain our response regardless of how others treat us.
The apostle Paul understood this principle. Though he preached to multitudes and laboured greatly for the Kingdom, his greatest concern was not merely the salvation of others but that he himself would not become disqualified. He disciplined his own life because he knew that personal holiness should never be a function of someone else’s actions.
Many believers have fallen into bitterness, unforgiveness, immorality, revenge, and compromise because they allowed another person’s failure to dictate their own conduct. Do not surrender your eternal reward because someone else offended you. Do not exchange your crown for a moment of retaliation. Keep your eyes on Christ and remain faithful, whether others obey Him or not.
Today, make this your resolve: “Whatever others choose to do, I will choose to please the Lord. My salvation is too precious to sacrifice on the altar of revenge, offence, or disappointment.”
Prayer Points:
- Let us thank God for His Word today and for the gift of salvation.
- Let us ask Him to help us guard our hearts diligently and never allow the actions or inactions of others to lead us into sin. Pray that He will give us the grace to overcome evil with good.
