There is a sin — and indeed a pattern of sin — that easily besets every one of us. It is worth pausing to ask ourselves honestly: what has been our historical response to the pressures of life, especially in seasons that feel stressful and overwhelming? Many of us have developed patterns of reaction that we have never examined, patterns that surface the moment the process no longer feels like it is in God’s hands. Scripture calls us to lay these aside.
When you feel tired, when the weight is heavier than your strength, simply learn to say, “God, help me” — like Peter did. When the wind was boisterous and he began to sink, he did not theorize about the storm; he cried out.
There comes a point when optimism alone can no longer carry the weight of disappointment. This is often when our patterns are most exposed — not only the patterns we inherited, but the track record of how we ourselves respond and react when things do not go as planned. It is worth remembering that the ratio of the dead to the living in our lineage is fourteen to one; there is much to learn from those who have gone before us — not only about curses that may manifest across generations, but about the inherited patterns of response we may not yet have named. Just as spiritual lineages can carry curses, our own lives carry psychological patterns worth examining honestly — and where necessary, seeking sound spiritual and psychological support is wisdom, not weakness.
The life of a believer is not left to chance. It is carefully attended to by God, hedged in with restraints designed to shape us into a people who appear pleasing before Him. Often, our disappointments arise from strongholds we have built around ourselves — places where we have leaned on our own independence rather than on Him, and which God must break before dependence on Him can truly take root.
We must never allow disappointment to shape our reality. Our lives must be guarded by truth — the truth that sets us free.
The good things we are expecting will arrive in their appointed time, met by our patience and our contentment — but faithfulness with what we hold now is what prepares us for what is coming.
Prayer Points
– Lord, help me restore my eyes to You alone, because by You I will walk on the sea.
– Lord, break every stronghold of self-reliance that keeps me from depending fully on You.
– Lord, reveal to me the patterns — inherited and learned — that easily beset me, and give me grace to lay them aside.
– Lord, guard my life by Your truth, that no disappointment may reshape my reality.
– Lord, grant me patience and contentment as I remain faithful with what I have today.
