42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Mathew 24:42-44
A few verses before the verses above, Jesus said that at His second coming, two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and the other left. So clearly not everyone will be raptured. But perhaps one may think it means all Christians will be raptured and unbelievers left behind.
However, a few verses later, in verses 45-51, we see how Jesus distinguishes between the faithful and wise servant and the wicked servant. They are both servants, which is indicative of having a relationship with the master(Jesus). But while the faithful servant is the one who carries out the Lord’s assignment until the Lord’s return, the wicked servant is the one who assumes the Lord is delaying in His coming and sees it as an opportunity to act contrary to the will of God, act ill towards others and follow the examples of the unbelievers.
So it is not just enough to be a Christian to be raptured, but you have to be a faithful Christian; one who is living out their faith daily to be among those who are taken when the Lord returns suddenly.
As clearly stated by Jesus, no one knows the exact day or hour when the Lord will return (Matthew 24:36). The emphasis of “for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” cancels that idea that perhaps no one knew at the time Jesus spoke, but later on someone might know. It shows it is a concealed secret, and there is a good reason for this: so that we simply just live ready.
Right from the early church, the disciples were anticipating the second coming of the Lord. It’s more than 2000 years ago, and we are still called to live in expectation of His second coming. The Bible says:
3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. 1 John 3:2-3
It is the hope that purifies. Therefore we are called to live in Him continually. Abiding in His word, walking in love, praying and seeking grace to trust and obey.
The Lord does not expect us to live in anxiety or fear (which is exhausting), but also not to forget His second coming; rather, anticipate it with joy. We are to take our rest in Him while standing in faith and prayer.
Prayer Point:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s ask God to help us repent of every sin.
- Let’s ask God to teach us to love, trust and live in Him daily.
