But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
(2 Peter 2:1 NKJV)

When you consider a shepherd watching over his sheep, you realise that the greatest danger is not always the wolf that comes openly, because the shepherd can recognise it. The greater danger is the one that comes secretly, appearing harmless while intending to destroy the flock.

The word of God warns us that false teachers and false prophets will arise among God’s people and secretly introduce destructive teachings. Jesus also warned His disciples, “Take heed that no one deceives you.” (Matt. 24:4)

False teaching may not always look obviously wrong. It can sound spiritual and convincing while quietly changing the truth of God’s Word. Jesus warned that false prophets would arise and seek to deceive many. (Matt. 24:24)

Therefore, believers must be discerning, especially in these last days. We must not accept every teaching, prophecy, or spiritual message simply because it comes from someone who claims to speak for God. Scripture says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.” (1 John 4:1)

The Bereans give us a good example. They listened to Paul, but they also searched the Scriptures daily to verify what they were taught. (Acts 17:11) The Word of God must remain our standard and final authority.

We must therefore know Scripture and grow in the knowledge of Christ so that we are not easily deceived. Paul warned believers not to remain spiritually immature, “tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine.” (Eph. 4:14)

Beloved in the Lord, Jesus is coming soon. Let us remain watchful, prayerful, and firmly grounded in God’s Word. The closer we get to the coming of Christ, the more important it is to know the truth and stand firmly in it. Be discerning!

Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let us pray for wisdom and spiritual discernment in these last days.
