“But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.” — Exodus 1:12 (NIV)
When God created Adam, He blessed him, commanding him to “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it…” (Genesis 1:28). Thus, increase is evidence of the blessing, and it is God’s will for all His children.
When Jacob prophesied that Ephraim would be greater than Manasseh, the first evidence of this was that Ephraim multiplied much more than Manasseh. It was said that Joseph “saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees” (Genesis 50:23 NIV). This means that within Joseph’s lifetime, Ephraim had increased even to the third generation, while Manasseh had reached only his second.
So, increase is a sign of greatness. Furthermore, the blessing of increase manifests even when circumstances are unfavorable. We see this in the lives of the children of Israel in Egypt. Even though they were oppressed, the Scriptures record that “…the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites” (Exodus 1:12 NIV). A spiritual blessing cannot be limited by natural circumstances; in fact, adversity often makes the blessing more evident.
The way to attract the grace for increase is through thanksgiving and giving. We see this when Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish. He gave thanks and gave the bread and fish to His disciples, who in turn distributed them to the seated crowd, and the food multiplied (Luke 9:16). Therefore, the more we give and thank God, the more He causes us to increase.

- Let us ask Him to help us give more and show more gratitude, so that He may increase us all the more.
