Title: Discerning Spirit

Discerning of spirits is a gift of the Holy Ghost, and I believe it is a priority for every servant of God, whatever capacity you serve Him in. It is the ability to know good from evil (Isaiah 7:15), and it also means knowing the intent, desire, and purpose of God concerning every situation you face (1 Corinthians 2:10).

Jesus exemplified this throughout His earthly ministry. After healing a man on the Sabbath, He was questioned by the Jews for it. His response was:

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30).

Jesus did not act from His own initiative — He moved only in step with what He discerned from the Father.

A servant who can accurately discern the will of his Master will serve effortlessly, without wasted works, and his labor will endure the fire of testing (1 Corinthians 3:13). A man serving God must be able to correctly perceive His will and carry it out, so as to serve Him acceptably, with fear and trembling (Hebrews 12:28). This is why Solomon, given the choice of anything, asked God for an understanding heart to discern between good and bad (1 Kings 3:9) — discernment is not a small request; it is the difference between fruitful service and wasted labor.
