“Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.” — Psalm 89:19 (KJV)

When Scripture recounts God choosing David to lead Israel, He describes him as “one that is mighty.” Yet at the time David was anointed, he was merely a youth tending sheep. How could he already be described as mighty?

Sometime after Samuel anointed David, a group of distressed, indebted, and discontented men gathered around him at the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1–2). Though initially outcasts, as they remained with David, they were transformed. Later, Scripture refers to them as the mighty men of David (2 Samuel 23:8 / 1 Chronicles 11:10–11). Walking closely with David, they caught the spirit and convictions that made him mighty, becoming mighty men of valor themselves.

In 2 Samuel 23, scripture details the extraordinary feats and acts of bravery attributed to each of these men (the exploits they did). The prophet Daniel wrote:

“…but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” — Daniel 11:32 (KJV)

The true source of strength behind the exploits of David’s mighty men was their experiential knowledge of God, learned through fellowship and discipleship. The same was true for David himself, whom God called mighty before he ever fought a giant or led an army, because his heart was anchored in the knowledge of God.

Similarly, when the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said, “The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour” (Judges 6:12), Gideon responded by recounting the testimonies of his fathers and the wonders God had performed in Egypt. He recognized that their distress was due to the nation turning away from the Lord. God then replied:

“Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?” — Judges 6:14 (KJV)

What was the “might” God acknowledged in Gideon? It was his knowledge of who God is and what God can do.

Just as with David, his men, and Gideon, God has mighty men and women on the earth today. Through them, He will accomplish great exploits in these times. The defining qualification to be counted among them remains unchanged: a deep, intimate knowledge of God.

Prayer Points

  • Thank God for His Word and the revelation that true spiritual might comes from knowing Him.
  • Ask the Lord for an impartation of grace and hunger to grow daily in the intimate, experiential knowledge of His person, His ways, and His power.
