“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps but took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”Matthew 25:1-4

The parable of the ten virgins reveals a powerful truth about preparation. All ten virgins had lamps. All ten were waiting for the bridegroom. All ten looked similar outwardly. But the difference was that five of them carried extra oil, while the others did not.

The wise virgins understood that having enough for the present moment was not enough. They prepared for the delay. When the bridegroom came at midnight, the lamps of the foolish virgins were going out, and they realised they needed more oil. But at that moment, it was too late.

This teaches us that our spiritual preparation is not something we should postpone. There will be a time when the state of our spiritual life will matter. At the end, it will not be enough to have the appearance of readiness; we must truly carry the oil that sustains our light.

Oil represents the anointing, and having extra oil is a testament to the depth of our relationship with God. It speaks of a life that is not built only on public moments, but on private time with Him (Intimacy). It is found in the place of prayer, where we seek His presence, and in the meditation of His Word, where our hearts are continually filled with His truth.

Many people want the light of the lamp, but the lamp can only keep burning when there is oil. Our spiritual strength, discernment, and endurance come from daily fellowship with God. The time we spend with Him today is preparing us for what is ahead.

The foolish virgins were not rejected because they had lamps; they were rejected because they lacked what was needed to keep their lamps burning until the bridegroom arrived. This reminds us that a relationship with God cannot be borrowed or transferred. We must personally seek Him and be filled. Let us not wait until the final moment before we seek extra oil. Let us cultivate a life of prayer, worship, obedience, and meditation on Scripture. The secret place is where our vessels are filled.

Prayer Points:

Let’s thank God for His Word today,  and let’s ask Him to help us not to live with empty vessels. And to teach us to seek Him deeply and consistently.
