“At the same time, he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.” — Acts 24:26 NIV
One of the ways God forms His image in us is by taking us through the process. The process consists of a series of intentional events allowed by God, from the day we are born until His image is fully formed in us. This process of the formation of Christ in us is similar to the process of converting raw materials into finished products.
An essential part of this process is the painful experiences or trials of life that we face. One of the reasons God allows such painful experiences is so that we may become mature, as revealed in James 1:2-4. However, for the process to run its full course, we have to submit to it. Submitting to the process means enduring painful experiences without seeking a way out through means not ordained by God. To understand this, let us consider Apostle Paul.
When Paul was arrested in Jerusalem after returning to Israel with gifts for his people from the Gentile world (Acts 21:17-36; Romans 15:25-27), he had an encounter where Jesus promised him that he would testify of Him in Rome (Acts 23:11). However, Paul remained in prison for about two years after that. While in prison, an official was hoping to receive a bribe from Paul so that he would release him (Acts 24:26).
Now, if Paul had bribed him, he would have been released, and that would have meant he did not submit to the process. God’s aim was not just for Apostle Paul to be in Rome, but for him to be protected while ministering there. We know from Scripture that he had private security in his rented apartment while carrying out his ministry without hindrance in Rome (Acts 28:16, 30-31). This privilege was because he arrived as a prisoner, whom God exalted before his captors. If he had bribed his way out of the process, he would not have enjoyed this privilege.
Joseph also submitted to God’s process when he refused Potiphar’s wife’s offer (Genesis 39:7-12). Though his choice led to more hardship, it kept him aligned with God’s purpose.
When we choose to walk in righteousness, even when simply sinning would end the trials, we are submitting to the process. It proves that we trust in God.
