“For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village. — Luke 9:56 (NKJV)
Reading through Luke 9, we see a Samaritan village resist Jesus simply because He was heading toward Jerusalem. Offended on His behalf, James and John asked if they should call down fire from heaven to consume them (Luke 9:52–56).
Consider what would have happened if Jesus had indulged their desire for immediate judgment. Who would have been left to save? Later, in Acts 8, we read of Philip preaching Christ in Samaria, where the multitudes heard the gospel with great joy. Had judgment fallen in Luke 9, the future harvest in that region would have been wiped out before grace could fully reach it. Jesus’ rebuke settled the matter directly: “The Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”
When we choose forgiveness over vengeance, we give space for people to encounter God’s mercy and turn to Him.
This same truth shines in the life of the Apostle Paul. When Stephen was martyred, Saul stood by in full approval, sharing in the guilt of Stephen’s blood. Yet with his dying breath, Stephen echoed Christ, praying: “Lord, do not charge them with this sin” (Acts 7:60). That posture of intercession and forgiveness helped preserve Saul’s story, leaving room for the persecutor to become an apostle.
Notice also that through all of Saul’s intense persecution of the early church, Scripture records no believers praying for his destruction. They endured, prayed, and allowed God to deal with his heart. When we lay down vengeance, we step aside so God can work conviction, transformation, and salvation in those who oppose us.
Choose mercy over retaliation. By extending grace, we reflect our Savior, and our identity as His disciples becomes unmistakable to the world.
Prayer Points
- Thank God for His Word today and for the mercy He extended to us when we were once far from Him.
- Ask the Holy Spirit for the strength to release offense, surrender the desire for vengeance, and forgive everyone who has hurt or wronged you.
- Pray for those who oppose or mistreat you, asking that God soften their hearts and draw them into repentance and salvation.
