“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” — Numbers 23:19 (NIV)

Some years ago, the Lord granted me an experience in the Spirit which He used to teach me trust—even when situations seem contrary. In a vision, He took me to the top of a high mountain, where He instructed me to dig out a pearl. As I was digging, I could not find the pearl, so I kept telling Him it was not there. However, He continued to insist that it was there, so I kept digging.

As I continued, someone came to help me, and eventually, I brought out a black pearl.

After this experience, still within the vision, He said to me, “When I say something is there, it is there.”

Many times, as believers, when we experience things that are opposite to what God has said—whether through His Word or a specific word to us—we are tempted to give up. But instead, we are called to trust and endure to the end.

One example is Joseph. God showed him in a dream that he would become a ruler. Yet shortly after, he found himself in a pit, then as a slave, and later as a prisoner. His experiences were contrary to the promise, yet in time, God’s word to him came to pass.

What if Joseph had given up? What if he had turned away from righteousness and started living in sin, neglecting his spiritual calling? Would the promises of God still have been fulfilled in his life?

Periods of contradiction are seasons that call for perseverance, not fainting; thanksgiving, not complaining. They are seasons where your faith is tested, and your character is revealed.

Therefore, when things seem opposite to what God has said, we must continue believing and trusting that His Word is true. He who does not lie will surely bring His Word to pass.

• Let us thank God for His Word today.
• Let us ask Him to help us trust Him, even when situations look contrary.
