Title: Setting Boundaries

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. (2 Kings 22:2 KJV)
On most motorways around the world, you will see lines demarcating the wide expanse into multiple single lanes for vehicles to travel through. These lines can be simply referred to as boundary lines. Traffic rules mandate that you indicate to other road users if you want to switch lanes for the safety of other road users. The major purpose of these boundary lines is to create orderliness, eliminate chaos and accidents, and preserve lives.
As believers going on a journey in this life, we need to stay on course by setting boundaries like King Josiah from our scriptural text, who pleased God and did not turn away from the path of David, his ancestor (2 Kings 22:2). These boundaries must be guided by scriptures and divine principles. Let us, therefore, look at some of the boundaries to be set.
1. Boundary against sin
In Proverbs 1:10, we see a warning, โMy son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.โ Sin is often subtle and enticing, drawing believers back into old patterns. Setting boundaries means intentionally avoiding environments, habits, and influences that pull us away from God. Like Joseph, who fled from temptation (Genesis 39:12), we must be decisive in separating ourselves from anything that compromises our walk with Christ.
2. Boundary against gossip and careless talk
Words carry power, and we are commanded not to let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths (Eph 4:29). Gossip and careless speech can destroy relationships and grieve the Holy Spirit. Establishing this boundary means choosing silence over gossip and encouragement over criticism. When we discipline our tongues, we reflect the character of Christ and promote peace among others.
3. Boundary against fear and defeat:
Fear is a tool the enemy uses to paralyse believers and limit their faith. However, 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God has given us power, love, and a sound mind to conquer fear. Setting a boundary against fear requires rejecting negative thoughts and standing firmly on Godโs promises. Even in uncertain situations, we must choose faith over fear because we serve a living God.
4. Boundary against limitation
Many times, the greatest limitations we face are the ones we place on ourselves. We must develop a possibility mindset by saying I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13). Godโs power enables us to rise above human limitations. By setting boundaries against doubt and any form of restrictions, we open ourselves to the fullness of what God can accomplish through us.
5. Boundary against laziness
Laziness hinders growth and delays purpose. In Pro. 6:9โ11, the bible warns against excessive sleep and idleness, showing how they lead to lack. As believers, we are called to diligence and stewardship. Our Lord Jesus worked all through his ministry on earth (John 9:4). Setting boundaries here means being disciplined with our time, committed to our responsibilities, and faithful in all that God has entrusted to us.
In conclusion, boundaries are not restrictions meant to hinder us; they are safeguards designed to keep us aligned with Godโs will. When we intentionally set and maintain these spiritual boundaries, we walk in order, purpose, and divine protection, just like lanes that guide travellers safely to their destination.
Prayer point:
Let us thank God for His word today.ย Let’s pray for grace to set appropriate boundaries so we can finish strong.
