35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35 NKJV
As the opening verse expresses, it is God’s will for us to be diligent and aim to be productive so that we can have more than enough not just for ourselves but also to give to the needy. For it is more blessed to give than to receive.
In order for us to be productive, we need to invest time and effort in our various skills and talents. However, one issue that could be a hindrance to this is spending too much time on social media and entertainment.
On social media, there is edifying and also unedifying content; the good and the bad. Entertainment is helpful to relax and enjoy. As they say, “Learning without playing makes Jack a dull boy”.
Nevertheless, so many people are spending too much time on social media and entertainment. Some of this time could have been invested in improving your skills through reading, studying the word of God, building real relationships through conversations and making time for them, etc.
Proverbs 24:33-34 says:
As A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.
You might say you don’t have time to serve in church or in an association, but you spend several hours on social media.
As a result of social media addiction, many are suffering from anxiety, reduced ability to concentrate on one thing for long, and even insomnia due to the screen light, etc
Since social media has both the edifying and unedifying, it calls for us to be selective and to be moderate in our consumption. You need time to pursue your purpose. You need time to build yourself. You need time away from your phone. You need time to serve in church or society. And most importantly, you need time to pray and study God’s word.
Take the challenge today: keep that phone away and read your bible, read another book, call a loved one or friend.

- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s pray that God will help us to subject our phones and put them under control.
- Let’s pray that God will help us to seek first His kingdom by seeking to know and focus on His callings for our lives instead of wallowing in social media addiction.
