Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token: [13] And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.  (Joshua 2:12-13 KJV)

The revivals that were documented and captured in books or passed down orally have shaped our beliefs, our convictions and our faith. We see ordinary but selfless men and women do exploits for the kingdom of God, and it rubs off on everyone and everything around them.

In our opening text, we see Rahab, a supposed harlot, who had lost moral relevance in society and could not be considered among the noble in the land. However, we see her heart when she had to intercede and negotiate the salvation of her family members. She was wise enough to know that the people of Jericho were no match for the children of Israel.

This was the same approach Solomon took when the Lord asked him what he wanted, and he asked for wisdom to judge the people of God. The Lord was impressed that he did not ask for riches or the head of his enemy but wisdom to rule over the people of God (1 Kings 3:5-14). Abraham is another example of a selfless intercessor. When he met the Lord and the two angels in the plain of Mamre, he kept interceding and negotiating for the life of Sodom and Gomorrah even though they were a corrupt nation (Gen. 18:20-32).

When we dedicate ourselves to praying for others, God makes it a priority to answer, and in addition to that, He makes available to us our own needs, like He did for Job when he prayed for his friends. Praying for self is good, but interceding for others is of a far greater reward.

In conclusion, God is looking for men who will stand in the gap for souls, families, society and nations for His agenda to find fulfilment upon the earth (Eze. 22:30). Midwives are needed to birth His purposes, and this is a call to join the camp of selfless intercessors.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask for grace to continually intercede for others selflessly.
