“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say โ€œNoโ€ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”
Titus 2:11-12 NIV

Some time ago, a neighbour made a request of my wife and me. This neighbour was elderly, and normally, we would not refuse her. However, as we considered her request, although we had the capacity to grant it, we realised that it would become a source of conflict in the future. Because of this very reason, we said no to her request.

Telling her no was not easy for us, as she had been kind to us in the past. However, when I told her our decision, she said to me that before she came to us, she had asked God if we would agree to her request, and God told her we would not. Despite what she heard, she decided to come to us in disobedience. As I pondered on what she said, it came to mind that we had made the right decision. Not long after this experience, the issue she was seeking help to address was resolved.

This encounter with my neighbour taught me the importance of saying no. Many, as a result of pressure, have said yes to things that later came back to hurt them. Others say yes to things but could not fulfil their promises because it was more convenient to say yes at that time. But when our yes is not yes and our no is not no, it is a sign that we are being influenced by the enemy, as affirmed in Matthew 5:37.

One of the signs of spiritual maturity is being able to reject evil and choose good, as revealed in Isaiah 7:15. We must learn to say no to things that would lead us into sin or take us out of the presence of God. When Joshua said yes to the Gibeonites simply because of how they appeared, he was led into error, as the Gibeonites were out to deceive him (Joshua 9).

Jesus Christ, who is the Grace of God that appeared to all men, taught us to say, โ€œNoโ€ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age (Titus 2:11-12 NIV). Saying no to sin would lead to a life of holiness, and saying yes to Him will bring you into His rest.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him for the grace to say no to things that are not His will, but yes to Him at all times.
