«Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.
Daniel 6:3 NKJV»
One of the most misunderstood kingdom concepts is the “Spirit of Excellence.” Many have wrongly reduced it to simply mean aesthetics; it is now about how the music sounds, how the church is arranged, and the smoothness of the speech of the Pastor. Such a concept of the Spirit of Excellence is a great distortion.
The individual who was described as having an excellent spirit was Daniel (Daniel 4:36, 6:3), and every mention of it was a description of an intrinsic quality rather than outward appearance. When the Scriptures said, “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him…” (Daniel 6:3 NKJV), it means this Spirit enables a person to excel above others. To properly understand how this Spirit comes about, we have to see its antithesis.
Reuben was one who was told that he would not excel because he was unstable, after he slept with his father’s wife (Genesis 35:22; Genesis 49:3–4). Now, if sin limits how one excels, it shows that the Spirit of Excellence is first about character more than anything else. Daniel was described as having an excellent spirit because he walked in righteousness. And doing so made him attract grace to excel above others.
The Psalmist wrote, “You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy” (Psalm 45:7). So, the reason this individual described here was anointed above others (excelled above others) was because he loved righteousness. This further confirms that the Spirit of Excellence is about character and less about aesthetics.
So, one with the Spirit of Excellence may not appear aesthetically pleasing, but he or she can be identified by their actions (fruits). While the devil focuses on the outward, God is more interested in the state of the heart.
