Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
1 Peter 3:9 NIV
Some years ago, I attended a church in Germany. At the end of the service, a young German girl approached me.
She was the fiancรฉe of a man of African descent. Perhaps this was why we easily connected and became close friends. In that friendship, she felt comfortable enough to share with me.
Her fiancรฉ was in a different country. God had connected them when she visited with her family, and they had plans to get married. Since she had not yet finished her university education, their relationship was long-distance at the start.
As we talked and spent time together, I noticed she was sleeping around, despite being engaged to someone the Lord had brought into her life. When I asked her why she was doing this, she replied, โBecause I donโt know what he is doing where he is.โ
Like this lady, many Christians have yielded to sin. Some do so as payback for what someone did to them. Others sin because they suspect their partner is being unfaithful.
Though these may seem like justifiable reasons, they are foolish. Salvation is personal. Do not let the actions or inactions of someone else cause you to fall into sin.
When we stand before the judgment seat of Christ, everyone will be judged alone โ even husbands and wives. Sinning because of what you suspect someone is doing or has done will not be a valid excuse when you are held accountable for your own actions.
As Christians, we do not reward evil with evil, but with good. This is what we have been called to do (1 Peter 3:9). We are also instructed to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
When someone acts in unacceptable ways towards you, do not repay them by acting in an unacceptable way yourself. Instead, continue walking in the path of righteousness.
That way, when He who is coming returns, He will reward your righteous acts.
Prayer Point
Let us thank God for His word today.
Let us ask Him to help us persevere in doing good, and not to be discouraged by the actions or inactions of others.
