3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:3-4 NIV 

God is omnipresent, meaning He is everywhere. He is also omniscient, meaning He knows everything. Even our deepest thoughts. This means God knows indeed everything done in secret. 

The secret place is a place where others do not see you. It’s just you or a few people, or at least so it seems. In the secret place, there could be private sacrifices or private sin. However, one thing we need to remind ourselves of as believers is that God is always there. God sees. 

When we are conscious of the presence of God, we are discouraged from private sins. And encouraged towards private sacrifices. Indeed, God will repay each one according to what they have done. (Romans 2:6). That means private sin will be judged if not repented from, and private sacrifices will be rewarded. 

I heard a preacher say: “Private sins will one day lead to public disgrace and private sacrifices will one day lead to public honour”

As one who has failed many times, I would tell you for free that overcoming temptation when alone is not always easy. But the word of God tells us that grace teaches us to say no to ungodly and worldly passions. (Titus 2:11-14). 

The verse “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me” is not only for when you need to encourage yourself to overcome stage fright or pass that examination. It is also when you face temptation, and you need grace to overcome it. 

Obeying God in secret comes from the fear of and love for God. Fear of God comes from remembering His judgment of sin, and the love for God comes from remembering what He has done for us, most especially the price He paid on the cross of Calvary. However, both of the fear and love for God are only possible because of the Holy Spirit who is in a believer (Romans 5:5). 

Both the fear and love of God are developed from knowing the Lord, through the hearing of the word of God and time with Him in prayer.

• Let’s thank God for His word today. 
• Let’s ask the Lord to help us grow in our fear and love for Him. 
• Let’s ask the Lord to help grow in our consciousness of His presence.
