“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.’” — John 5:19 (NIV)
Heaven and earth are designed to reflect one another; God’s desire is for whatever is built or established on earth to mirror what is in heaven. Therefore, when we are spiritually aligned, our words and actions here on earth function in complete synchronization with His heavenly will.
Recently, I was in a car with someone who was preparing to park. As she maneuvered into the space, she carefully adjusted the vehicle to fit properly within the marked lines, maintaining an appropriate distance from other vehicles. Watching her, it struck me how much her alignment depended entirely on her vision: if she could not clearly see the boundaries of the parking space, she would have been unable to position the car accurately.
After that observation, John 5:19 came to mind: “the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing.” The reason Jesus could replicate the works of the Father was that He possessed the spiritual sight to perceive what the Father was doing. Similarly, when the Lord instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, He said:
“See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” — Exodus 25:40 / Hebrews 8:5
Moses could construct the physical sanctuary accurately because he had first seen the divine pattern revealed to him.
In the same way, our lives cannot be properly aligned with God’s will if we lack spiritual sight. It is only when we clearly see that we can accurately reproduce His will on earth. We cultivate this sight in three vital ways:
- Meditating on the Word: When we spend quality time in Scripture, God illuminates our understanding and provides the blueprint and instructions for daily living (Psalm 119:105).
- Cultivating a Life of Prayer: While Scripture gives us universal truths and commands, prayer reveals specific divine direction for our personal lives—unfolding the unique steps God wants us to take (Jeremiah 33:3).
- Imitating Mature Believers and Mentors: Apostle Paul wrote:
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.”) — 1 Corinthians 11:1
As mentors and spiritual leaders fix their gaze on Jesus and follow Him, their lives become living blueprints for us to learn from and emulate.
Prayer Points
- Let’s thank the Lord for His word today.
- Let’s ask Him to open the eyes of our understanding according to Ephesians 1:18. And Remove every veil of spiritual blindness so we can perceive what He is doing in this season.
- Let’s ask Him to grant us the grace and sensitivity to align our thoughts, decisions, speech, and actions with the pattern of heaven, so that His kingdom may be manifest through our lives.
