For he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin.” (1 Peter 4:1)

Yesterday, we saw that God often uses suffering to mature His children. Today, we will consider another purpose of suffering: preservation.

The Apostle Peter writes that the one who suffers in the flesh has ceased from sin (1 Peter 4:1). While not all suffering is corrective, Scripture shows that God can sometimes permit affliction and discipline to keep His children from destruction and preserve them for eternity.

One example is found in the church at Corinth. A man was living in serious immorality, and the Apostle Paul instructed the church to exercise discipline. He wrote, “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 5:5).

Though severe, the purpose was not condemnation but salvation. God was more concerned about the man’s eternal destiny than his temporary comfort. Through discipline and affliction, the Lord sought to bring him to repentance and preserve his soul.

This reminds us that God’s dealings with us are motivated by love. At times, He may allow difficult circumstances to expose sinful paths, correct our course, and draw us back to Himself. Such suffering is not meant to destroy us but to preserve us.

Therefore, when God disciplines us, we should not despise His correction. As a loving Father, He is committed not merely to our earthly happiness but to our eternal welfare.

May we have hearts that respond to His dealings with humility, repentance, and faith.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for a heart that responds rightly to God’s correction.
  • Ask the Lord to preserve you blameless until the day of Christ.
