“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.” ย (Romans 8:17)
Recently, I found myself meditating on why God allows His children to suffer. As I pondered this question, a thought came strongly to my heart: suffering is part of the package.
As believers, we are heirs of the blessing of Abraham through faith (Galatians 3:29). Yet, Scripture teaches that God often uses suffering as a tool to prepare His children for the inheritance He has promised them.
James writes, “Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:2-3). Trials test our faith, produce perseverance, and develop spiritual maturity. He goes on to say that when patience has completed its work, we become mature and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:4).
The life of Job illustrates this truth. James presents him as an example of perseverance (James 5:11). Job’s suffering was not the result of personal sin but part of God’s purpose in revealing and refining the character He had formed in him. Through suffering, Job’s faith was proven, and his knowledge of God deepened.
God desires mature sons and daughters. Just as a child must grow before handling an inheritance, believers often pass through seasons of testing before being entrusted with greater spiritual responsibilities (Galatians 4:1-2). Therefore, suffering is not always a sign that something is wrong; sometimes it is evidence that God is at work, shaping us into the image of Christ.
If you are passing through a difficult season, remember that God may be using it to mature you. The trial may be temporary, but the character it produces can have eternal value.
